A Day in the Life of Karla Smith...ATI Worker in Selby

Wednesday 19th December

It’s getting closer to Christmas and I can feel the excitement around the office.

Today I got to the office at 9am and caught up with a few emails and had to book a few participants onto some courses via email and the dashboard. One course being a CSCS course which starts on 22nd January and runs for 8 days, at the end of the course the participant obtains a CSCS card and will be able to get a labouring job on a building site which is his aim.

I had one appointment booked in today at 11am, this was to update some paperwork with a participant and prepare for the Pathways to Better Wellbeing course with WEA starting 8th January. I am going along to the first one to support this participant so they feel at ease and comfortable settling in. I spent 60 minutes with this participant.

Now to get ready for the Selby Christmas Party for some of our Participants. Cash for Kids in Leeds kindly donated us 11 sacks full of presents to give out to come of our participants that were struggling around the Christmas time and were unable to afford presents for their children.

We thought it would be a good idea to get together with North Yorkshire Horizons and host this at their hub in Selby. We set a time slot from 2pm – 4.30pm and we all had a part to play. I dressed as an elf. We asked people to sign up if they wanted to come and they were given a time slot to come. We had some sweets and drinks for the children and tea and coffees for the parents. We put some activities out for the kids to do, colouring and arts and crafts. We had Christmas music on and it was a really lovely afternoon and lovely to see children and their parents enjoying themselves together.

Each child saw Santa and received a present. We also bagged up some extra toys for the parents to give to their children on Christmas Day.

We spent the afternoon yesterday decorating a little grotto where Santa sat and wrapping the presents.

Being able to do something like this for people is the reason why I love my job. Giving other people opportunities they may not have elsewhere.
